All the existing jails in Punjab are over-crowded. At present there are 65,964 + inmates confined in the Punjab Jails whereas authorized accommodation is 38,139. The basic purpose of constructing new Jails is to minimize the operational burden on the existing Jails besides coping with over-crowding and clustering. the following projects have recently been completed:
- District Jails at Bhakkar, Layyah, Pakpattan, Hafizabad, Narowal, Rajanpur, Okara, Lodhran and Khanewal
- High Security Prison, Sahiwal. High Security Prison, Mianwali.
- High Security Barrack at Central Jail, Rawalpindi
- 48 Death Cells at Central Jail, Lahore
- 28 Security Walls at Central & District Jails
- Sub Jail, Shujabad, Sub Jail, Pindi Bhattian
