According to Rule 889 of the Pakistan Prison Rules 1978, one or more Deputy Inspectors-General may also be appointed to assist the Inspector General of Prisons in the discharge of his duties; if as the total workload on the Inspector General is overwhelming in view of the huge functionality covering issues & matters pertaining to prisons and prisoners. Duties of the Deputy Inspector General shall be assigned by the Inspector General.
At present two DIGs of Prisons (BPS-20) are posted in the Inspectorate General of Prisons Punjab, Lahore as DIG (Headquarters) and DIG (Inspection). Posts of the DIG Prisons (BPS-20) have also been created at all Divisional Headquarters in the Punjab, except Gujranwala. The Punjab Prisons has thus been divided into eight (8) Regions for effective supervision and monitoring of jails. The Regional DIGs of Prisons oversee the Jails located in their respective prisons region. They ensure the transmission of directives and circulars instructions issued by the Inspector General of Prisons to the field formations besides monitoring their implementation in due course.
