Construction of New Jails  

Except Borstal Intitute & Juvenile Jails and Sub Jail Chakwal, all Jails existing in Punjab are over-crowded. At present there are 45,000 + inmates confined in Punjab Jails whereas authorized accommodation is 21527. Prisons Management Information System (PMIS)  

A project for the establishment of Prisons Management Information System as a Pilot Project at the District Jail, Lahore, with an estimated cost of about 30 million rupees has been approved by the Government of Punjab, Home Department. The project envisions to automate all aspects of prison functionality from registration of interviews, maintaining database of prisoners. The main objective of the department is to convert these inmates into skilled manpower during their sentence, by teaching them the art of textile and towel weaving, carving furniture, weaving carpets and dari, making pottery and cement blocks, and many other items which help them in adjusting into the society after the completion of their sentence. Installation of PCOs  

the idea to introduce PCOs in Jails was approved by the authorities and a Pilot Project was launched at District Jail Lahore in 2013 wherein the Government allocated approximately 2 million rupees for the establishment of a high-tech PCO both facility to facilitate the telecommunication of inmates with their family and friends. Mobile Jammers  

The existence of mobile phones in Jails is one of the major challenges confronted by the Prisons Department. The illegal use of mobile phones by prisoners involved in high profile/ terrorism cases create a negative impact in the society heaving far reaching implications for the law & order. Helpline 1124  

Call on 1124 to register your complaints against the Jail Administration:

Punjab Government has established a Helpline 1124 for the convinience of public to solve the individual and collective problems / complaints relating to Jail Administration.

Just call 1124 without any code at any time and register your problems / complaints:

  • Bad behaviour of officials with the interviewers
  • Sale of sub-standards and costly / higher price goods
  • Unfair demands
  • Point out problems faced by the inmates inside the Jail
  • Missing of basic facilities for interviewers like wash room, clean drinking water etc

Procedure / method for solving the problems / complaints:

  • Your problems / complaints will be recorded scientifically
  • Recorded problems / complaints will be directly sent to the concerned Superintendent Jail
  • In case of non-compliance on the part of Superintendent high ups will proceed at the earliest

Note:

For the timely solution of problems / complaints, the complainant should have to register the complaint with complete particulars.

Provision of Interview and Waiting Sheds  

Government of the Punjab has established waiting / interview sheds in all jails of Punjab in order to facilitate the inmates and visitors. All essential facilities are provided to the visitor here i.e water coolers, fans, proper sitting arrangements etc. Construction/renovation of interview / waiting sheds have been completed in 27 Jails of Punjab. readmore...

Punjab Prisons Foundation  

The history of Punjab Prisons Foundation is quite lengthy as the Punjab Prisons Foundation (Charitable Trust) was notified by the S&GAD Department in May 2012 under the Charitable endowment Act 1890 but the same could not be operationalized due to various observations of Public Accounts Committees and Government functionaries. However, effects continued and finally on the advice of Law Department, the Punjab prisons foundation were registered under the provisions of Societies Act 1860. The aims and objectives of the society are as under:

  • To adopt ways to facilitate the members of Prison Force to an appreciable extent so that they are relieved of their domestic anxieties
  • To adopt techniques to obviate indulgence in malpractices and improve their efficiency in the performance of their duties
  • To mend the moral character of the prisoners and to make them gentle and productive citizen of the society interalia, providing the prisoners all possible amenities and medical aid to the poor prisoner
  • To facilitate and manage education facilities to prisoners and prisons staff
  • To research & implement techniques for character building of the prisoners and staff as well
  • To arrange legal support for poor prisoners who cannot afford the same
  • To make arrangement for provisions of basic necessities of life to prisoner
Shaheed Package  

Government of the Punjab has sanctioned Shaheed Package for Prison Officers / Officials who are martyred in encounters with terrorists including death in a bomb blast and riots in jails (the package is not offered to those officials who die in an accident). They shall be awarded compensation of Rs.2 Million from compensation fund and Rs.1 Million from the Punjab Prisons Foundation Fund, provided that Home Department may recommend a higher grant for gazetted officers in suitable cases. readmore...

Training of Staff  

The Punjab Prisons Department is offering major role in keeping the society clean from the terrorists, corrupts and law abundant elements. In the current scenario when the terrorists are pro active, they are more trained and have latest weapons. Many incidents are being occurred of prisons breaking. One incident has occurred recently in Dera Ismael Khan, Khyber pakhtunkhwa where terrorists attacked the jail with latest artillery and destroyed the main gate and boundary of the jail and were able to take many dangerous prisoners with them. Pay Package and Upgradation  
The previous Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, visited Central Jail Lahore and Central Jail Rawalpindi during his tenure and passed various orders regarding management of prisons and prisoners. He issued directions to the concerned authorities of the Punjab Government for upgradation of pay scales of the Prison Officials/Officers and to increase their pay packages on the analogy of the Police Department. In compliance to the orders of the Honorable Chief Justice, Government of the Punjab issued notification of upgradation of Pay Scales from Assistant Superintendent to I.G Prisons and increase in pay packages (one initial pay in addition) for all ranks (vide Government of the Punjab, Home Department, Lahore’s Notifications No.SO (Prs) 18-24/2009 dated 26th September 2009).
