Inspectorate General of Prisons Punjab

The Inspector General of Prisons Punjab has been appointed under Rule 888 of the Pakistan Prison Rules 1978, who exercises, subject to the orders of the Provincial Government, the general control and superintendence of all prisons situated in the territories under Government of the Punjab, under Section 5 of  The Prisons Act 1894. Under provisions of Rule 889 of the Pakistan Prison Rules 1978, Deputy Inspector-Generals of Prisons have also been appointed, to assist the Inspector General in the discharge of his duties as the total workload on the Inspector General is great in view of the large numbers of prisons and the prisoners.

At present, two DIGs of Prisons (BPS-20) are posted in the Inspectorate as DIG (Headquarters) and DIG (Inspection) to assist the I.G. Prisons Punjab and to supervise various branches of the Inspectorate.

The DIG (Inspection) is assisted by the AIG (Judicial), AIG (Industry), Senior Law Officer, Senior Psychologist, Assistant Director (Audit), Law Officer, Psychologist and other officers /officials.

Posts of the DIG Prisons (BPS-20) have been created at all Divisional Headquarters in the Punjab, except Gujranwala under provisions of the aforesaid Rule 889 of the Pakistan Prison Rules 1978. The Punjab Prisons has thus been divided into eight (8) Regions for effective supervision and monitoring of jails. The Regional DIGs of Prisons oversee the Jails located in their respective prisons region. They ensure the transmission of directives and circulars instructions issued by the Inspector General of Prisons to the field formations besides monitoring their implementation in due course.

The Inspectorate monitors the working of eight (8) Regional Offices and exercises command and control over the management and superintendence of forty-three (43) Jails in the Punjab. It is also responsible for taking policy decisions and circulating various instructions from time to time besides monitoring their implementation.
